Venezuela held legislative and regional elections on Sunday, with the Great Patriotic Pole Simon Bolivar (GPPSB) securing a significant victory. The elections saw Venezuelans voting for 24 governors, 285 national lawmakers, and 260 state legislators.
The GPPSB’s list of national lawmakers received 82.68% of the valid votes, demonstrating strong support. Several opposition alliances also participated, including the Democratic Alliance, the UNTC-Unica Alliance, and Neighborhood Force, though with significantly lower vote shares. The Guayana Esequiba state also had its first governor and representatives elected.
The National Electoral Council (CNE) reported a voter turnout of 42.63%, which is relatively higher than the average in previous elections. This election was seen as a demonstration of democratic spirit despite calls for abstention from the opposition.
Key members of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), part of the GPPSB, were elected to the National Assembly. Opposition members from various alliances also secured seats. This new parliamentary configuration gives the ruling party a significant majority.
President Nicolas Maduro announced plans for constitutional and electoral reform to be discussed by the new National Assembly. He stated that the Bolivarian Revolution is strong and that Venezuelan democracy has strengthened despite challenges. The new assembly’s term will run from 2026 to 2031.
