Amazon’s Prime Air drone delivery service is expanding its offerings to include a wider range of products, including popular electronics and accessories.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has approved the service to deliver items such as Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy cellphones, Apple AirTags, Apple AirPods, Ring doorbells, and Alpha Grillers Instant Read Food Thermometers.
Customers who live in eligible areas can now order these items and potentially receive them within 60 minutes of checkout.
Currently, the service operates in limited locations, specifically College Station, Texas, and the West Valley area of Phoenix, Arizona.
To be eligible for drone delivery, the ordered item must weigh five pounds or less, and the weather conditions must be suitable for drone flight.
When ordering, customers will see a drone delivery option in the checkout section of the Amazon shopping app, if eligible.
Customers can select a designated delivery spot at their address, which can be saved as a default location.
Amazon has improved its delivery estimate accuracy, providing a delivery window typically within five minutes.
The drones identify suitable delivery areas, free of obstacles, and descend to approximately 13 feet for delivery.
Unlike previous iterations, customers no longer need to use a QR code; the drones can automatically identify the delivery location.
